Steps to Take Before Going to An Emergency Dentist

To give yourself the best chance of minimizing complications, here is some advice on what to do before arriving at the dentist.

  1. Leave the tooth in the mouth/socket if it’s still connected. Do not attempt to remove it yourself.
  2. Rinse your mouth with warm water if blood is present, cold water may be sensitive to exposed nerves. Icing of the face and jaw may be effective if swelling is present.
  3. If you have a knocked out tooth, bring it with you to the dentist as they may be able to save it. You need to see a dentist within 30 minutes, maximum an hour to have the best chance of saving the tooth.
  4. Make sure you handle the tooth with care, do not touch the root of the tooth. If it’s dirty you can gently rinse it and then replace it in the socket, or place it between the gum and cheek if you can’t do that. Ultimately you can place it in milk in a clean container and bring it with you to the dentist.

Why Choose an After Hours Dentist?

Usually pain is the main driver that sends people to seek immediate treatment. This can be caused through accidents or a worsening of an already existing problem.

  • Tooth Extractions

In the instance where the tooth cannot be saved it is necessary to perform an extraction. In instances where a common tooth extraction cannot be performed, due to hard to access teeth, your dentist may be required to conduct a surgical removal. This involves administering local anesthetic before performing the extraction.

  • Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth can flare up and rapidly and require immediate attention. While this is not typically an area that requires the services of an emergency dentist, if you need help over the weekend, it will be very difficult to find a regular dentist to see you.

  • Toothaches

Toothaches can be a result of many things, but the worst are abscesses in the gum. This painful infection requires immediate treatment. Sharp, throbbing or stabbing pain can be a sign that you have an abscessed tooth and you should seek an appointment immediately.
